Modern Business Integration

  • by

Modern business, no matter the size and how big it is, is a complicated process. Even small businesses utilize tens or hundreds of different business, marketing and operational software to function.

These applications must work together seamlessly to help achieve the outcomes that are most important to the business. Business integration attempts to accomplish this by enabling and connecting the participants in an eco-system to work as one cohesive whole.

The proper design is vital to a successful business integration. Too often, an integration is developed using a coding style that makes it difficult to change the design. The wrong design choices could lead to a system which is difficult to maintain and operate, as well as being expensive.

In the past, business integrations were primarily focused on integrating IT software and systems like CRM and ERP solutions. This type of integration is called application integration, and is usually accomplished through APIs or other tools that enable connectivity between systems. These types of integrations are usually limited in their scope and usually require a group of dedicated technical staff in the field to maintain and manage them.

The key to successful modern business integration is an approach that is more holistic and is focused on integration of business services. This is achieved through mapping the essential business services to the proper technology. It also involves the creation of the necessary components to facilitate integration, like connectors and data mappings. A rigorous testing and deployment procedure is also required in a controlled environment. Then, a process of monitoring and optimization is implemented to ensure that the integration meets the goals.
